The A1M motorway through Yorkshire forms part of a strategic link in the national network between Scotland, the North East and the south of England. In 2003, Road Management Services (Darrington) Ltd (RMS) was awarded a 33-year Design, Build, Finance and Operate (DBFO) contract by the Highways Agency for the operation and maintenance of 33 miles of the A1M between Darrington and Dishforth. In 2011, after a re-tendering process, Tarmac's National Contracting division won the eight-year contract, and together with its 4 year extension has a possible value of £40 million.
