IMO faces calls to tackle underwater noise pollution

ENVIRONMENTAL groups have called on the International Maritime Organization to cut underwater noise pollution from ships. Average underwater noise in many oceans has increased by about 20 decibels in the past 50 years and has more than doubled in some Arctic areas in the past 10 years, a webinar was told. Noise pollution harms marine life by interrupting the sounds that animals use to feed, navigate and communicate. It can also disturb oil companies' communications with their subsea equipment.
