Technology is key for resilient and sustainable global trade

THE COP26 conference highlighted the urgency for all industries to tackle climate change. The shipping industry, the backbone of international trade, currently accounts for nearly 3% of total greenhouse emissions and is under pressure to decarbonise to keep global temperature rise within the Paris Agreement. Under a business-as-usual scenario, the International Maritime Organization projects emissions could represent 90%-130% of 2008 emissions by 2050. It is encouraging to see nations and industry leaders signing the Clydebank Declaration at COP26 to create zero-emissions shipping trade routes between ports to accelerate the decarbonisation of the global maritime industry.
