Sensory, connected, responsive, often-interactive so-called intelligent signs are becoming increasingly common on our roads.Typically used in conjunction with digital machine vision technology incorporating automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and optical character recognition (OCR) software, intelligent signs form part of systems able to monitor, track, redirect, preempt and inform traffic.One company pioneering these types of systems is Survision. According to their CEO, Jacques Jouannais, optical character recognition using machine vision camera technology is essential to tracking vehicles and communicating with drivers using intelligent signage: "For instance, the EU has stipulated that all vehicles carry an orange sign with information on the material being transported and the hazard it presents, for example petrol uses 33, highly flammable and 1203, gasoline," he notes.
