Italy’s Enel ready to revive Porto Empedocle LNG project

THE Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to drive changes in various countries’ energy policies and plans, including in the sphere of LNG. On March 8, it was reported that Italian utility Enel was preparing to revive previously abandoned plans to build the Porto Empedocle LNG import terminal in Sicily, off the country’s south coast. This emerged at the same time as the European Union unveiled plans to cut Russian gas imports by two-thirds within a year and phase them out it out altogether by 2030. The plan includes ramping up gas imports from non-Russian suppliers, including LNG shipments. For this, Europe will also need to beef up its regasification capacity, following warnings in mid-February - prior to Russia’s attack on Ukraine - that the continent’s import terminals had limited capacity available to absorb additional LNG cargoes.
