Russian Anti-Ship Missiles

This report examines Russian an-tiship missiles including ship-, submarine- and air-launched types. The most widely exported Russian an-tiship missile has been the P-15 (SS-N-2 Styx) and its derivatives but these are no longer in production. Until 1992, the Russians did not manufacture small antiship missiles comparable to the Exocet or the Harpoon. In the early 1990s, Russian missile manufacturers were forced to reorient their priorities and develop weapons more suitable to the export market. At the low-cost end, Kh-35 Uran/SS-N-25 offers a close analog of the Harpoon and Exocet and it has already been exported to Algeria, India and Vietnam. At the high end, Novator is offering a family of naval missiles called the Club (SS-N-27 Sizzler) which has been sold to India and China, and NPO-Mashinostroy-enie is offering the supersonic Yakhont (SS-N-26 Strobile) which is being jointly marketed with the Indian Brahmos firm as the PJ-10.
