Patriot is the US Army's primary medium- to long-range air defense missile system. The Patriot was first deployed in 1982, and first used in combat during Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia in January 1991. Although developed primarily as an anti-aircraft system, Patriot has secondary anti-tactical missile capability. The system became famous in this "Scud-busting" role in the 1991 Gulf War. Through the end of FY92 (the last year basic Patriot procurement was funded), the US Army received funds for 6,523 missiles and 104 fire units. This included 283 missiles in the Desert Storm supplemental appropriation. The final production batch of 184 PAC-2 missiles was built in the GEM (Guidance Enhanced Missile) configuration; 165 other missiles were upgraded to this configuration, and 75 more in FY99-00 to the GEM Plus configuration.
