The SSST (Supersonic Sea Skimming Target) is an unmanned aerial vehicle designed to test and evaluate US Navy anti-air warfare systems and to train personnel to defend against low-altitude supersonic an-tiship missiles. It was developed to replace the AQM-127 Supersonic Low Altitude Target (SLAT) which was terminated in FY92 because of technical difficulties. Boeing and Hughes Aircraft were given study contracts in 1993 to begin the effort. In 1995, Boeing (now Boeing) was contracted to develop the MA-31, a target version of the Russian Zvezda-Strela Kh-31 (AS-17 Krypton) to provide an interim capability for this role. Boeing provided 18 MA-31s to the Navy since 1995, and in 2000 won a contract to provide further 41 MA-31 as an interim SSST which were funded in the FY99-04 budget. None of these drones have been delivered due to Russia's subsequent refusal to sell more missiles.
