GBI

GBI (Ground Based /nterceptor) is the missile element of the Ground-based Mid-course Defense (GMD) portion of National Missile Defense (NMD). It initially comprises a Raytheon exo-atmospheric kill vehicle (EKV) launched aboard an Orbital Sciences boost vehicle (BV). On 30 April 1998, a team led by Boeing was selected as the Lead System Integrator (LSI) for the NMD program, with a Lockheed Mar-tin/Raytheon/TRW consortium called UMDC losing the bid; Boeing's leadership was extended another five years in 2008. In December 1998, Boeing selected Raytheon for the EKV element of the GBI. The surrogate test-bed for the GBI was the PLV Payload Launch vehicle, a modified version of the Minuteman Ⅱ missile prepared by Lockheed Martin. The production GBI is based on an entirely new booster from Orbital Sciences.
