Swiss UAVs

The ADS 95 Ranger is joint development effort of Ruag Aerospace (formerly Contraves-Oerlikon) and Israel Aircraft Industry's Malat UAV division aimed at fulfilling a Swiss army requirement. The system's official name is ADS 95 Ranger (Aufklarungs Drohnen System). The Ranger air vehicle is patterned after Israeli UAVs such as the Scout, suitably modified for use in the Swiss environment. The Swiss army has a requirement for five systems, and in 1995 received a contract for 28 UAVs. The first complete Ranger system will be delivered in mid-1998, and deliveries took place through 2000. The Ranger was under consideration for the Netherland's Sperwer UAV requirement, but in 1995 lost out to the French Crecerelle. The Swiss army plans to acquire further Rangers under the Army XXI program, bringing the total to 28 Rangers. The Ranger was selected by Finland in 1999 for a total of six air vehicles and one system, with a second system ordered in 2003 bringing the total to 12 air vehicles.
