MGM-140/164/168 ATACMS

The MGM-140 ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) is a deep attack, semi-ballistic missile designed to strike second-echelon enemy forces. The missile is launched from the Army's MLRS (multiple-launch rocket system) M270 launcher. Low rate initial production (LRIP) was funded with FY89, and was accelerated to permit fielding the system during Operation Desert Storm. First deliveries of the missile were in early 1990. The initial Block 1 version uses an APAM submunition warhead. The Army subsequently acquired the Block 1A extended range version of ATACMS, substituting more fuel for fewer submunitions; low rate initial production began in 1996. The Army had a requirement for 1,647 of the Block 1A extended range versions. The Block 1A QRU (Quick Reaction Unitary) was a modified version using a Harpoon unitary warhead instead of a sub-munitions pay-load and was funded in FY03-08.
