EAPS (Extended Area Protection and Survivability) was a new start by the US Army in 2007 with an aim towards fielding a follow-on system to current C-RAM (Counter Rocket, Artillery, Mortar) defensive systems such as the Raytheon 20mm Centurion radar-directed gun. The Army has funded both a 50mm EAPS rapid-fire cannon and a parallel missile-based system. An integrated demonstration program for a missile-based system began in February 2008 with awards to Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman with an aim to testing prototype systems and making a transition into System Design and Development. Raytheon was awarded a contract to develop an Advanced Improved Interceptor (AI3) missile using off-the-shelf technology for this mission.
