Python 4 is a short-range IR-hom-ing air-to-air missile developed by the Rafael in Israel as a successor to the Python 3 and Shafrir 1/2 A AM. Approximately 4,700 Python 3 are believed to have been completed, and the more advanced Python 4 entered low rate production in 1990. This missile was exported in small numbers. The US examined the Python 4 to provide interim capability until the arrival of the AIM-9X, but did not pursue this option. In September 1998, Lockheed Martin and Rafael came to an agreement under which Lockheed Martin cooperatively marketed the Python 4 and assist in future missile developments, as well as manufacture some portion of the missile.
