The US Air Force and Navy are beginning to examine hypersonic cruise missiles to attack surface targets. The Navy has supported a string of such programs such as Fasthawk (also known as Low Cost Missile System/LCMS) in 1996, High Speed Strike Missile (HiSSM) in 1997. In a related move, in 1998 DARPA began a program called ARRMD (Affordable Rapid Response Missile Demonstrator) which examined air-launched hypersonic cruise missile propulsion. ARRMD resulted in a dual-combus-tor ramjet (DCR) design that underwent lab trials in the summer of 2001. DARPA has funded the program as HyFly (Hypersonic Flight) program. The Boeing HyFly missile with Aerojet propulsion had an initial test in 2006, with full-power tests beginning in 2007. The Navy's Office of Naval Research has been promoting a variety of applications for hypersonic missiles such as the Lockheed Martin RATTLR (Revolutionary Approach to Time Critical Long-Range Strike Project).
