Occurrence of visual symptoms of pest and disease in 15 sweet cherry varieties under organic cultivation.

In a cherry orchard located in southern Italy with 15 sweet cherry [Prunus avium] cultivars producing fruits suitable for processing, the occurrence of visual symptoms associated with some biotic and abiotic adversities was monitored during 2002-04. Among the biotic stresses, Archips rosanus, Cylindrosporium padi [Blumeriella jaapii], Monosteira unicostata, Operophtera brumata, Tetranychus spp. and summer phylloptosis are described. The main abiotic adversity was fruit cracking. The incidence of damage appeared to be affected by genotype and year. No cultivar was fully resistant, although fruits obtained under organic cultivation remained suitable for processing..
