Smaller production and rising demand hike guarana prices

Brazil's guarana production is expected to drop to 3,669 tonnes in 2014, down 0.19% from the previous year, according to a new forecast by Brazil's Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).If the forecast materialises, it will be Brazil's lowest guarana harvest since 2009 and the third consecutive harvest that has failed to top the 4,000-tonne mark.Bahia will remain the largest producer of the berry crop with 2,672 tonnes, trailed by Amazonas that is expected to harvest 740 tonnes in 2014. Mato Grosso, the third largest producer state, will produce 242 tonnes this year, according to the IBGE estimate.
