European cement sector sticks to compliance trading of EUAs

The largest cement companies in Europe are active participants in the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme, although most activity is for compliance purposes, rather than as a business enterprise. Carbon dioxide emissions from the cement sector account for around 5 percent of man-made CO2 emissions globally, according to most producers, although some estimate the sector produces a more modest 3-5 percent of the global total. Players agree that the sector is an important potential area of focus for emissions reduction strategies. European cement producers are already involved in such efforts but some warn that they are at risk from competitors in countries where emissions are less costly.
