Further extreme weather predicted - US report

The US must come to terms with the reality of more extreme weather in the country as the effects of climate change take hold, according to an early draft of the US' 3rd national climate assessment released in January. "As climate change and its impacts are becoming more prevalent, Americans face choices [in terms of reducing emis- sions and adapting to new climactic conditions]," the draft says. The "level of current efforts is insuffi- cient to avoid increasingly serious impacts of climate change that have large social, environmental, and economic conse- quences", it warns. The draft is expected to undergo extensive revisions before a final version is eventually published.
