Australia's camel carbon offset plan hits a hump

Australia's Domestic Offsets Integrity Committee (Doic) says a plan to award carbon offsets for culling some of the country's 1mn feral camels does not satisfy methodology criteria under the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) because of uncertainty over the amount of emissions saved. Doic endorses offset programmes under the CFI, which allows Australia's agricultural sector to sell carbon credits in the voluntary market (AGE, May, p3). The plan fails to meet the standards because verifying the cullings using log book records, ammunition records and decla- rations by project participants will be difficult to audit, Doic says. "Such records could be adjusted to inflate abatement estimates and are not easily auditable," it says.
