Caucedo in expansion mode

The DP World Caucedo transhipment hub in the Dominican Republic is moving forward with upgrades to accommodate larger vessels and to provide value-added service to shippers. On 26 August, Caucedo began dredging berths on its 600 m quay down to a depth of 15 m from 13.5 m currently. In addition, dredging is being done to a depth of 17 m in an area adjacent to the current berth, to prepare for future expansion, confirmed DP World (DPW) Caucedo executive director Morten Johansen. Caucedo's current capacity is 1.65 million teu/year, up from 1.44 million teu/year in 2013 as a result of paving new yard areas. An additional 540 m of potential quay area is available beyond the existing berth, which could conceivably bring capacity to 2.5 million teu/year. "That's still the long-term plan and the dredging is the first step in that direction," Johansen told IHS Maritime, although he noted that there is no firm commitment yet to additional berth construction.
