When pipetting with piston-stroke pipettes, operation with a minimum of manual effort is of primary importance because these devices are used very intensively. Ergonomics and the ease of operation of the instrument are especially important when thepipettes are used in long, serial operations in the same work position. These important considerations were the central focus in the development of the Transferpette~(R) electronic pipettes. The objective was accomplished: the Transferpette~(R) electronic from BRAND is the first pipette worldwide to be awarded the "ergonomics certificate" from the TUV Rheinland/Berlin-Brandenburg. Twenty years ago, coworkers and supervisors often dismissed the complaints of those people who reported health problems in the laboratory due to intensive, repetitive work with piston-stroke pipettes. The situation has changed fundamentally. The first published references to repetitive strain injury (RSI syndrome) were reported in 1982. RSI Syndrome refers to diseases of themuscle-skeleton system and particularly in the area of the neck, wrists and thumbs from repetitive work activities. Since the original reports, a very large number of articles have appeared, which treat this topic in various work areas.
