EUROPEAN RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURES: EDITORIAL

We are pleased to introduce this special extended section focusing on Research Infrastructures showcasing work funded by the European Commission and the United Kingdom funding bodies. Over the past decade we have witnessed a 'turn to infrastructure', not only in Europe and the UK but globally: starting with the e-Science programme in the UK, followed by the National Science Foundation's 'Atkins Report' (so called after the chair of the Committee responsible for the Report) in the US and the corresponding report for the Humanities 'Our Cultural Commonwealth', and, perhaps less visibly, the European Commission's research infrastructure working group (ESFRI) Roadmap and research infrastructures funding programme.
