Caustic Soda

Table 11 shows our estimate of the consumption of caustic soda in the alumina industry. Those estimates are based on the data for alumina production in Tables 4 and 5 and our annual estimates of the consumption of caustic soda per tonne of alumina produced at each plant, taking account of the qualities of bauxite and the recoveries of caustic soda in the process. We estimate that total consumption of caustic soda in the world alumina industry in 2005 was 6.5 million tonnes dry NaOH, about 530,000 tonnes (8.9 percent) higher than in 2004. 2006 is expected to show another increase in consumption about 650,000 tonnes. On current plans, caustic soda consumption in the alumina industry will be 1.8 million tonnes higher in 2009 than in 2005.
