摘要

Tower Hamlets and Newham LBC both voted to keep the post of directly-elected mayor in referendums run alongside the local elections. In Newham, where voters were offered the choice of maintaining their current model or shifting to a committee system, 56% of voters opted to keep the mayor. Current mayor, Rokhsana Fiaz, said: 'The voters of Newham have opted to keep their right to directly elect the mayor to be their champion and their voice at the council.' In Tower Hamlets, where there has been a mayoral system for more than 10 years, 78% of residents voted to keep the mayoralty. Elsewhere in the country, Conservative Ben Houchen was re-elected to lead the Tees Valley combined authority and Joanne Anderson has become the new Labour mayor of Liverpool after surviving a strong challenge from independent candidate Stephen Yip.
