Standardization of harvest maturity time in nectarine cv. Silver King in mid-hill conditions of Himachal Pradesh.

Nectarines are the smooth skinned peaches, which were evolved through mutation. Among different cultivars of nectarine grown in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Silver King has shown tremendous scope in the recent years. Nectarines like other stone fruits cannot endure long post harvest shelf life at normal atmosphere as they are subjected to softening immediately after harvest. Nectarine is a delicate crop, well known for its poor shelf life. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to study the harvest maturity of Silver King cultivar of nectarine at the experimental orchard of Department of Fruit Science, Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H. P.) during 2010 and 2011. It was observed that the Silver King took 72 to 75 DAFB to reach the maturity. On the basis of consistency in the results, DAFB, fruit colour, firmness, total soluble solids and total sugars were found to be reliable indices of maturity for Silver King cv. of nectarine.
