Variation in faba bean cultivars to Orobanche infection as measured by different reaction scales.

The susceptibility of faba bean [Vicia faba] cv. Giza Blanka, Giza 2, Giza 3, Giza 402, Giza 429, Giza 674 and Giza 843 to Orobanche crenata infection was assessed in pot and field experiments, based on percentage O. crenata incidence, O. crenata severity (number of spikes per host plant) and V. faba yield losses. Field experiments were performed at Giza and Shandaweel, Egypt, in the 1995/96 and 1996/97 winter seasons. Results indicated that Giza 843 had medium tolerance in pot experiments based onOrobanche incidence. Other varieties were very highly susceptible. In artificial and natural infestations in the field at Giza, Giza 429 and 843 were partially tolerant. Under natural infestation at Shandaweel, all tested varieties, including Giza 429 and 843 were very highly susceptible, based on O. crenata incidence. In pot and field experiments, all varieties had low to medium susceptibility based on the O. crenata severity scale. A scale incorporating all 3 infection parameters to assess V. faba susceptibility is presented.
