In pot experiments in 1994/95 and 1995/96, Lavandula officinalis [L. angustifolia] plants were sprayed with kinetin at 0, 20 or 40 mg/litre and/or brassinosteroids (up to 1 week later) at 0, 20 or 40 mg/litre, 3 months before the first and second cuts (June and November, respectively). Foliar application of kinetin and/or brassinosteroids significantly increased plant height, number of branches, and plant fresh and dry weights. Chemical constituents and essential oil yield per plant were also influenced by the treatments. The highest content of total hydrocarbons and the lowest content of total oxygenated compounds were recorded in plants sprayed with kinetin at 20 mg/litre combined with brassinosteroids at 40 mg/litre. In addition, essential oilquality was highest (low 1,8-cineole and camphor contents, and high linalool and linalyl acetate contents) after this treatment.
