Genetic variability in indigenous cotton (Gossypium arboreum) of North Eastern Region

During kharif 2001-03, in the northeastern region of India, cotton (Gossypium arboreum) germplasms were evaluated for genetic variability and its related parameters, i.e. genotypic coefficient of variance, phenotypic coefficient of variance, heritability in broad sense and genetic advance as percentage of mean. Data were recorded on days to flowering, plant height, number of bolls per plant, boll weight, and seed cotton yield per plant The germplasms exhibited significant variation for all the traits, along with high estimates of genetic variability and its related parameters. Hence, these germplasms could be considered as valuable sources of genetic variability for future breeding purposes.
