Economic impact of sub surface drainage on rice and pearlmillet production: a case study of Haryana Operational Pilot Project.

The costs, returns and efficiency of basmati rice and pearl millet production in areas with and without subsurface drainage systems (SSD) in Haryana, India, were assessed and compared. Data were obtained from 89 household producers covered by an SSD project and 27 others who were not. The annual cost of the drainage system was estimated at Rs. 2666.66/ha. Costs, yields and returns were higher on farms with drainage systems compared to those without drainage.
