EFFECT OF HARVEST STAGES ON THE SEED QUALITY OF DIFFERENT SORGHUM (SORGHUM BICOLOR(L.) MOENCH) VARIETIES

Sorghum (Sorghum bicoior (L.) Moench) is the major fodder crop of Haryana. Since it is grown mainly for green fodder due to its wider adaptability, not much attention has been paid to its seed production, its seed is generally not available and the quality of whatever seed produced is poor. Good quality seed is a pre-requisite for better establishment and increased production of fodder crops. Hence there is an urgent need to increase the production of quality seed. Selection of high yielding varieties and manipulation of agronomic practices especially stage of harvest of seed crop are some of the options available to increase yield and to improve quality of seeds produced. Since little research work has been done on these aspects under agro-climatic conditions of Haryana, a study was planned to investigate the effect of some promising varieties and stages of harvest on the quality of sorghum seeds.
