A field experiment was conducted in Pantnagar, Uttarnachal, India, during 1996-98 to investigate the effect of production factors on the productivity of spring rice cv. VL 206. The soil was sandy loam and slightly acidic in reaction with pH of 6.2 and high organic C, available P and K. The treatments comprised a control, farmers practice (3 hand weedings), weed control (pendimethalin at 1.5 kg/ha), mulching (pine needle at 5 t/ha), mulching (farmyard manure at 7.5 t/ha), weed control+insect control (chlorpyrifos at 4.0 kg/ha), weed control+mulching (pine needle), weed control+mulching (farmyard manure), mulching (pine needle)+insect control, mulching (farmyard manure)+insect control, weed control+mulching (pine needle)+insect control, and weed control+mulching (farmyard manure)+insect control. Mulching (farmyard manure)+weed control+insect control resulted in significantly higher values of growth parameters (plant hills at harvest, number of tillers and plant height), yield attributes (panicle height, density, weight and length, number of grains per panicle and 1000-grain weight) and yields (straw and grain). This treatment also caused a significant reduction in weed density and dry weight and shoot borer infestation.
