Sarda Sahayak Canal (SSC) occupies largest command area, covering 2 million ha land of eastern U.P. SSC has revolutionsed the production of crops in the area, however, it is hazardous to the soil due to problems of seepage and .water logging. The seepage is causing water logging and increasing soil salinity. Besides it is also affecting ground water and resulting in soil degradation (Pagnis et al. 1996; Oswal. 1997). In view of increasing demand of land resources, there is a need to examine the soiland water composition besides water table fluctuations to determine the suitability of crop cultivation in the area. Thus the present study was undertaken.
