Juice quality and sugar yield in sugarcane ratoon as influenced by trash mulching and nitrogen levels

A field experiment was conducted during 1995-1998 at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagarto see the effect of mulching (no mulch and trash mulch @ 6 t/ha) and nitrogen fertilization (0, 75, 112.5, 150 and 187.5 kg N/ha) on juice quality and sugar yield in sugarcane ratoon under tarai condition of Uttaranchal. Trash mulching did not influence significantly any of the quality parameters and sugar yield. However, juice extraction, brix, cane yield and commercial cane sugar yield increased with trash mulching. Contrarily, sucrose percent, purity coefficient (percent) and available sugar (percent) registered decline. Increasing N application led to significant increase in juice extraction, brix, cane and commercial cane sugar yield. Sucrose (percent), purity coefficient (percent) and available sugar, respectively exhibited a negative trend. Application of 187.5 kg N/ha gave 2.3, 15.2, 22.0 and 43.5 percent higher (mean) caneyield than 150, 122.5, 75 and 0 kg N/ha. Trash mulching increased cane yield by 3.8 and 5.8 percent during the two seasons.
