The effect of different combinations of plant growth regulators on the formation of multiple shoots was studied. Multiple shoot cultures were directly induced substantially from different juvenile explants. The resulting cultures consisted of unorganised tissues touching the solid medium and multiple shoots. Transfer of the cultures to different concentrations of BAP (0.1 to 1.0 mg/1) stimulated the number of multiple shoots per explant. Morphogenetic response of cotyledonary leaves was the highest (90.00percent) and it also gave the maximum number of shoots (9-13) per explant. TLC assay of the culltures' extract showed the presence of vindolinine, leurosine, catharanthine, etc. in shoots, whereas ajmalicine, serpentine and leurocristine were localised in the unorganised remaining calli.
