Plague season hits Madagascar

A worker from Madagascar's Ministry of Health disinfects a school in the capital Antananarivo, one of 10 cities to have been hit by pneumonic plague. Although plague is endemic to Madagascar, this the first time the most virulent form of the disease has been seen in the country's densely populated urban areas, said the World Health Organization. Bubonic plague predominates, generally affecting remote areas, but the government confirmed last month that a Seychelles national had died from pneumonic plague on 27 September.
