Developing a new vaccine against tuberculosis Tuberculosis is the world's leading cause of death by infection. The only vaccine approved for clinical use against tuberculosis, the BCG vaccine, is effective in immunising uninfected children against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, but is of markedly variable effectiveness among adults. In a phase IIb trial, a new vaccine against TB was tested for efficacy in preventing pulmonary tuberculosis among adults already infected with M tuberculosis.
