Doctors and duels

If you look back through The BMJ's a archive, it is striking how much of what concerned doctors 100 years ago continues to preoccupy them now. Yet one thing the doctors of today can safely not worry about is how to properly conduct themselves in a duel. In 1898, however, The BMJ thought it was worth "young medical men" being "prepared for whatever may turn up, including duels." With that in mind, the journal laid out the advice (Br Med J 1898;1:511)given by a DrP Devillers, who had recently discussed in La Medecine Moderne "the function of the doctor in duels in all its aspects."
