LARGE-SCALE DEEPWATER exploration and production has long been an aim of the oil and gas industry. However, only 20 years ago deepwater E&P was often too expensive and technically difficult to pursue. In some cases, more energy might have been expended to reach oil and gas reserves than would result from the finds themselves. And, at that time, onshore supplies were, if not plentiful, available in reasonable quantities.
