New room air conditioners (RACs) began to be released for the 2009 market from October 2008. Japanese manufacturers launched flagship as well as popular lower-end models from January to March of this year. It is evident that the key selling point this year is energy-saving performance, in line with growing user awareness of the need for energy savings and environ-mental protection. RAC manufacturers are required to list the annual performance factor (APF) on product labels. The energy-saving performance corresponding to particular service conditions is specified in product catalogs as manufacturers and retailers are trying to tap potential replacement demand.
