Sanyo Develops Japan's First CO_2 Refrigerant Direct Expansion Refrigeration System

Using natural CO_2 refrigerant for refrigerated display case systems Sanyo Electric announced the development of a direct expansion type refrigeration system using natural refrigerant (CO_2), the first of its kind in Japan, for use with supermarket freezer showcases. The HFC R404A has been the main refrigerant used in refrigeration systems for freezer showcases. However, natural CO_2 refrigerant has a very low global warming potential (GWP) compared to alternative fluorocarbons (about one four-thousandth), and can therefore greatly contribute to the prevention of global warming. Test installation of the system was undertaken at a supermarket in Tokyo in August 2009.
