Research findings and recommendations for evacuating surgical smoke with an appropriate medical device during open and laparoscopic procedures have been widely disseminated.Although the use of smoke evacuation devices in surgical services is embraced by many health care professionals, some resist using these devices for a variety of reasons, including noise, distraction, and the ergonomic difficulties of equipment use. Concerns related to surgical smoke range from its being a nuisance to the potential for health risks from long-term, continuous exposure to carcinogenic substances.
