Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) was first described in 1997 when performing a cholecystectomy with the aim to decrease parietal trauma and post-operative pain, reduce the incidence of incisional hernia and improve cosmesis. However, the use of this approach was not widespread. With the emergence of Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery as the next surgical revolution, SILS is now the object of new interest because it combines the idea of 'No Scar' surgery with the possibility of using conventional laparoscopic instruments without violating any natural orifice. More recently a wide range of surgical procedures have been performed using a SILS approach including cholecystectomy, appendectomy, adrenalectomy, several bariatric procedures and colorectal surgery.
