Creating change: building the capacity of the medical workforce in Aboriginal health

It has been recognized for some time that the health and health-care outcomes for Aboriginal people in Australia are significantly less than that for non-Aboriginal Australians.1"3 The multiple and diverse factors that influence this ongoing disparity in health outcomes, such as the social determinants of health, are mostly outside of the health profession and health-care settings.4 However, the role of health practitioners and health-care services and systems are important, given the differential levels of care and interventions that Indigenous people receive when they attend for health-care advice.56 It should be noted that differential outcomes from clinical contact have also been documented for minority groups in other settings.7,8
