A recent study, based on three decades of satellite data, suggests the Amazon rainforest is losing its ability to recover from damage caused by droughts, fires and deforestation. This shocking discovery is, sadly, not surprising when many impacts of global climate change are now irreversible, according to the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The United Nations says humans and nature are being pushed beyond their abilities to adapt. Despite this bleak outlook, however, the authors say there is still a brief window of time to avoid the very worst impacts. As lead author Dr Helen Adams points out, the future depends on us, not the climate.
