UK car production falls by more than a third

Car production in the UK in March fell by more than a third on the year, as measures imposed to contain the spread of Covid-19 hit production, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said today. Total UK car manufacturing fell by 37.6pc on the year to 78,767 units last month. Manufacturers were forced to close plants as demand from domestic and overseas markets fell sharply amid the coronavirus crisis. Output for the domestic market fell by 36.8pc, with 16,969 units produced. Lockdown measures, including the closure of many other industries, began in the UK on 23 March. Plants were allowed to remain operational. But showrooms were forced to shut and their closure consequently resulted in mills pausing their production.
