摘要

The paper by Phalitakul et al. (2013) entitled 'Vaspin prevents methylglyoxal-induced apoptosis in human vascular endothelial cells by inhibiting reactive oxygen species generation' provides evidence of a causal link between the production of hormones by adipose tissue and endothelial dysfunction. Furthermore, they have established that a naturally occurring hormone released from adipose tissue is capable of preventing endothelial dysfunction by down-regulating NADPH oxidase activity. As such, this paper has established a foundation for further exploration of the association between obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD), and these findings support the view that a potential therapeutic benefit may be realized through manipulation of adipokine levels.
