IMO (International Maritime Organization) has finalized the first world-wide regulation on NO{sub}x and SO{sub}x in 1997. The new regulation has not come into force yet. However, because of the grand father clause, practically the regulation has already started from the vessels built after the first day of year 2000. In addition to the world-wide regulation, there is a local regulation on NO{sub}x and SO{sub}x in Sweden. And more strict regulation is expected to come in near future. There are NO{sub}x abatement technologies already applicable to marine engines but in long term bases, cleaner fuel will be used and the type of propulsion engine may have the possibility of to be replaced to fuel cell or gas turbine.
