Mexico is believed to possess considerable hydrocarbon resources in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico that have not yet been developed. Pemex has been drilling deepwater exploration wells since 2006, making its first significant find in the area near the US maritime border in August 2012. A more recent discovery was made at Maximino, just over the border from Shell's Perdido field in the US Gulf.
