One solution for shipowners to significantly reduce the risk of being shortchanged on fuel is the use of Coriolis fuel meters. Born in 1792, the French mathematician and physicist Gustave Gaspard de Coriolis discovered the principle of behaviour that was named after him. The principle of the meter is relatively simple: if you imagine a garden hose held like a skipping rope swaying back and forth, it will sway uniformly. If you do this with water flowing through the hose, the hose will twist, causing an oscillation which is different at each end of the hose's 'U' tube.The accurate measurement of this oscillation forms the basis of mass flow measurement, and can determine not only the mass of fluid flowing through the pipeline, but also the density.
