Sewol captain jailed for life

Captain Lee Joon-seok, the master of the Sewol ferry, which sank in April killing more than 300 people, was convicted of gross negligence on 11 November and given a life sentence of 36 years. South Korean prosecutors claimed that he failed in his duty by leaving his vessel 'without making any efforts to rescue passengers'. The ferry's chief engineer, Park Gi-ho, was found guilty of murder and jailed for 30 years. Thirteen other crew members were jailed for between five and 20 years on charges including abandonment and violating maritime law.
